Playing MP3 in CentOS 5.4 (or RHEL 5)

Among several apps available for playing MP3 in Linux xmms works for me.

I add Dag Wieers rpmforge repository with:

rpm -Uhv http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el5/en/i386/rpmforge/RPMS/rpmforge-release-0.5.1-1.el5.rf.i386.rpm

Then:

yum install xmms xmms-skins xmms-mp3

There was a problem in that the doublesize option didn't work correctly but this has been fixed with the latest update (1:1.2.10-14.el5.rf).

To enable mp3 in totem and rhythmbox (and for Sound Juicer CD ripping to mp3) you can do:

yum -y install gstreamer-plugins-bad
yum -y install gstreamer-plugins-ugly

These also come from rpmforge. Voila!

[solved] My microphone does not work on Skype in Xubuntu 9.10 !!

I just solved a problem where my microphone can not work for Skype. I was really sure that there is nothing wrong with my hardware since when I am using Windows XP everything runs well. I tried to find out through googling but got no clue.

I started to troubleshoot the mic by running alsa recorder:

arecord -v -v -Dhw:0,0 -f cd test.wav

(I spoke up for a while and hit CTRL C to stop the recording process)

aplay test.wav

Unfortunately I can not hear anything. So I got a conclusion that the problem must be on the alsamixer setting. After spending few hours, I experienced an "Aha!". The answer is enabling the "ADC Capture" and "Microphone Capture" as seen on the picture below:

Enable GUI Root Login on Fedora Core 11

After struggling for about 1 hour, finally I can log into my GNOME Desktop using root account. Aha!! The problem is on pam module called pam_succeed_if.so. This module is designed to succeed or fail authentication based on characteristics of the account belonging to the user being authenticated. One use is to select whether to load other modules based on this test. This module disallows root login using GUI.

OK here are the steps:

1. From the terminal you have to change your acces to root.

su

2. For these followong files:

/etc/pam.d/gdm
/etc/pam.d/gdm-password
/etc/pam.d/gdm-fingerprint
/etc/pam.d/xdm

Using vi editor or gedit, find the line read as follow:

auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

Comment out the line using # so it is looks like this:

# auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet

Save

Make sure you have finished editing all those files.

Now, logout from your system and you should be able to log into your system using root account. :)

Creating CD or DVD Backup on Linux

Although this is not new but it does no harm for me to keep writing it. Ok, here is the scenario: i have a folder named /backup . I want to burn that folder everyday after midnight and run it automatically or from command line. To do that, we need to create shell script and put it on the crontab file.

Requirements (make sure you have installed these):

cdrecord
mkisofs
dvd+rw-format
growisofs

1. Creating The Shell Script

#!/bin/sh
# DVD backup script by Hargyo Tri Nugroho (http://neopispot.blogspot.com)
# Rev. 0
mkisofs -R -J -o /root/src/cdimage.iso /backup
dvd+rw-format -force /dev/dvd

Save this shell script as backup.sh . This script will create an iso image named cdimage.iso then format the DVD-RW, and continued with writing the image onto the DVD-RW. A log file named backup.log will be created to record the last backup time by crontab.

2. Setting Up The Crontab

[root@bugzilla ~]# crontab -e

put this line

save using ESC + :wq!

Setup a Subversion Server in Minutes

I just finished configuring my subversion server using svnserve in about 2 minutes. But I believe you may get faster. Assuming you will use authentication for your subversion service, here are the steps:

1. Create Repository

svnadmin create /svnrepo/myproject

2. Configure svnserve.conf

vi /svnrepo/myproject/conf/svnserve.conf

find and uncomment this lines:

anon-access = none
auth-access = write
password-db = passwd

3. Add user

vi /svnrepo/myproject/conf/passwd

add username and password like ' myname = thisismypassword '

4. Testing
These commands will create a dummy data under folder named prj. Then this folder is imported to your svn repo directory.

mkdir -p prj/trunk
mkdir -p prj/tags
mkdir -p prj/branches
svn import prj /svnrepo/myproject/prj -m "Initial repository layout."
rm -rf prj
svn co file:///svnrepo/myproject/prj
cd prj/trunk
mkdir -p test
echo foo > foo
echo bar > test/bar
svn add foo test
svn ci -m "Imported sources."

Now, you can connect to this server using Turtoise SVN (for Windows), or using this command from the terminal:

svn co svn://my.ip.or.hostname/svnrepo/myproject/prj

Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again

Update: This problem has now been resolved by the Fedora Community. But you may still not be able to download the updates properly from the mirrors due to the busy network and rush.

The recently released Fedora 11 Leonidas has some issues with it’s regular update process. Many users are getting a strange error which complains about the inability of the update system to retrieve the repository metadata, namely repomd.xml. You can see the error as attached in this inlet below:

Error: Cannot retrieve repository metadata (repomd.xml) for repository: fedora. Please verify its path and try again

When we tried to install Fedora 11 for the first time, we also faced a similar problem. A quick twitter search brought us to a conclusion that we were not alone. But a little tweaking of a few system files brought us back on track. In this article we tell you, how to go about resolving the problem in case you face it too.

You need to edit two of your repository files: /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo. Now un-comment all the lines that start with the term baseurl and place a comment before all lines that start with mirrorlist. This should be done for both the above files.

Now edit your /etc/hosts file and append the following to it’s contents:

80.239.156.215          mirrors.fedoraproject.org
213.129.242.84          mirrors.rpmfusion.org

Now try updating your system or installing any software via Yum. You will see, the error is now resolved and the error message is not shown anymore.

Web 2.0 for Employment of Individuals with Mental Impairments

Web 2.0 applications are the latest and newest trend in website designing. This version has brought about a revolution in how sites are built and applied in practical usage, thus increasing its overall functionality.

Yao-Jen Chang tries to bring this luxurious of Web 2.0 to support the employment service for people with mental illness in Taiwan. As seen on the figure, a prototype consists of multimedia database, discussion forum, introduction website, and anywhere portal has been built based on user-needs gained from prior observation, in-depth interview, and focus groups. Using this services, job-coaches and care-givers are now able to share their knowledge, information, experiences, and all other things related with mentally disabled persons.

This system is effectively helping the community. Monitored 9 days activities show that 60% of members are active on the discussion board, 80% probability of replied topics, dissemination of information is 75% faster.

There is an interesting fact about this prototype "the more messages posted there, the more members who contribute them". This seems to be another phenomenon of participation inequality which is faced by all social-network services - such as Lurk, Facebook, Friendster, etc - and can be overcame as follows: make it easier to contribute, make participation a side effect., rewarding people for contributing, promote quality contributors.

As I explain in this article, by using cloud computing technologies we are like bringing huge supercomputer everywhere! Users need not have knowledge of, expertise in, or control over the technology infrastructure in the "cloud" that supports them.

6 Layers of The Cloud Computing Stack

Sam Johnston, explains the cloud computing taxonomy as 6 layers of the Cloud Computing Stack (from top to bottom) as follows:

Clients are computer hardware and/or computer software which rely on The Cloud for application delivery, or which is specifically designed for delivery of cloud services, and which are in either case essentially useless without it. Examples: Mobile (Android, iPhone, Windows Mobile), Thin client (CherryPal, Zonbu, gOS-based systems), Thick client / Web browser (Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, WebKit)

Services (aka Web Service) are "software system designed to support interoperable machine-to-machine interaction over a network" which may be accessed by other cloud computing components, software (eg Software plus services) or end users directly. Examples: Microsoft Online Services

Application leverages The Cloud in software architecture, often eliminating the need to install and run the application on the customer's own computer, thus alleviating the burden of software maintenance, ongoing operation, and support. Examples: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube.

Platform (aka Platform as a service) (the delivery of a computing platform and/or solution stack as a service) facilitates deployment of applications without the cost and complexity of buying and managing the underlying hardware and software layers. Examples: Google App Engine, PayPal, Google Checkout, OpenID.

Storage is the delivery of data storage as a service (including database-like services), often billed on a utility computing basis (eg per gigabyte per month). Examples: Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service)

Web 2.0 Mapping Tools For Nonprofit Housing Services

Tsuei Ma-Ma is the earliest and the largest NGO devoted for the housing services especially for disadvantaged people in Taiwan. Since seven years ago Tsuei Ma-ma has been using database driven website to help both landlords and tenants finding housing information.

As seen on the figure below, Yao-Jen Chang et al proposes a new system which is a mashup of housing data and Web 2.0 mapping tool (provided by Google Maps APIs). The system also implements a component called Matchmaker which performs heuristic matching based on housing conditions and user preferences.

There are many benefits for the users. Notification is sent to the user whenever any match is found so that the user can immeadiately check it out on the website. They may search particular housing location by moving arround the map and then zooming the picture out to know the details of the neighbourhood and facilities such as schools, bus stops, police stations, hospitals, etc.

Another example of this kind of system is Housingmaps.

Since the proposed system is just a prototype, there are many other services might be added.

GoBloG Orang Indonesia !!

Beberapa waktu yang lalu saya sempat tertarik dengan jargon GoBlog - yang mirip dengan kata goblok - mengajak orang muda Indonesia untuk menggunakan blog. Namun sayangnya, saat itu saya belum berminat untuk kembali menjadi manusia goblog.

Dahulu sebenarnya saya sudah memiliki beberapa blog yang isinya tak lebih hanya curhatan mengenai cinta, kuliah, musuh bebuyutan, maupun resep-resep makanan. Sampai pada suatu hari sabtu di mata kuliah Broadband Wireless Networking and Services, Prof. Chang, sang professor yang mantan engineer di IBM ini bercerita panjang lebar mengenai web 2.0 yang kembali menggugah hasrat goblog saya.

Apa itu blog?

Dikutip dari Wikipedia, Blog merupakan singkatan dari "web log" adalah bentuk aplikasi web yang menyerupai tulisan-tulisan (yang dimuat sebagai posting) pada sebuah halaman web umum. Tulisan-tulisan ini seringkali dimuat dalam urut terbalik (isi terbaru dahulu baru kemudian diikuti isi yang lebih lama), meskipun tidak selamanya demikian. Akhir-akhir ini para professional pemasaran menerapkan corporate blogging di perusahannya. Tujuan utamanya adalah agar perusahaan mereka terlihat pakar dalam bidang usaha mereka. Sebagai contoh: Bank of America (Future Banking) dan World Bank (PSD Blog) adalah dua contoh bank yang sudah memiliki corporate blog. Kedua institusi ini berlomba-lomba menulis artikel perbankan yang tentunya akan mendongkrak searchability mereka di search engine. Mobile Social Assistive Technology : a Case Study in Supported Employment for People with Severe Mental Illness

As explained in this paper, Yao-Jen Chang et al found that mobile social network services (MSNS) can be utilized as a system that may improve the quality of life of people with severe mental illness. They propose an MSNS system that enables a person with mental illness go to their workplace on time with minimum supervision from their job coach/care-giver/family member. This system has some major uniqueness since it implements mobile social assistive technology.

As assistive technology the system has to be assistant-like gadget. The system should be designed according to the user`s needs.

For the subject with mental illness they choose PDA (Asus P535) comes with Windows Mobile 5.0 which is not easy interface to work with by the participants. So they use two strategies: first, the program automatically starts when the PDA is turned on. Second, they implement a very simple GUI for calling help as seen on the picture above.

For the care-givers/job-coaches, this system implement SMS-based notification to inform if any help form them are needed regarding to people lost, late arrival, etc. Job-coaches / care-givers are very mobile professionals on which, actually, computers/laptops are not a suitable handset for them. However, the web-based console is still needed and very useful to set up the alarm services with regard to the regions and time periods to be watched.

Beside device-choices and user interfaces, the most interesting technology on this system is the social network technology which underlying on mobile connectivity. Using this system, the job-coaches/care-givers are now able to taking care of the subject with disabilities without spending all their time to watch the monitor. The system will notify them if something goes wrong and they can quickly know the current location of the subject.

The field experiment results show that this system works well. However, I believe future researches and improvements are still possible to do. In the future, we may able to use PDA for the job-coaches/care-givers as well so they do not need to use computer to set up the alarm. They also can immediately know the location of the subject only by checking the mini-browser in their PDA.

Cloud Computing : You Bring a Huge Super-Computer Everywhere!

Cloud computing liberates the user from having to remember where the data is, enables the user to access information anywhere once created, and makes services fast and powerful through essentially infinite information and computing. People are using cloud services to find, share, create, and organize information. People are also using cloud services to shop, bank, communicate, socialize. By using cloud computing, these capabilities will be accessible not only on PCs but also telephones, automobiles, televisions, and appliances.

There are 6 interesting ideas from Kai-Fu Lee's keynote about cloud competing presented at the 17th International World Wide Web Conference in China:

1. User centric. If data is all stored in the Cloud - images, messages, whatever - once we are connected to the Cloud, any new PC or mobile device that can access our data becomes ours. Not only is the data ours, but we can share it with others.

2. Task centric. The applications of the past - spreadsheets, e-mail, calendar - are becoming modules, and can be composed and laid out in a task-specific manner as we can see in Gmail.

3. Powerful. Having lots of computers in the Cloud means that it can do things that our PC cannot do. For example, Google Search is faster than searching in Windows or Outlook or Word because a Google query hits at least 1000 machines.

4. Accessible. Having data in the cloud means we can instantly get more information from different repositories - Google's universal search is one example of simultaneous search.

5. Intelligent. "Data mining and massive data analysis are required to give some intelligence to the masses of data available (massive data storage + massive data analysis = Google Intelligence)."

6. Programmable. MapReduce is the solution for new programming paradigms. It cuts a trillion records into a thousand parts on a thousand machines. Each machine will then load a billion records and will run the same program over these records, and then the results are recombined. While in 2005, there were some 72,000 jobs being run on MapReduce, in 2007, there were two million jobs (use seems to be increasing exponentially).

Mobile Application Services VS Internet Services

Mobile application services has been developed rapidly recently. The development is highly related with cloud computing, social network, and especially internet services. But actually, the development of mobile application services has major differences compared to internet services.

There are several common issues that we must consider as we develop our mobile application:

Device specification. Mobile device design and development is unique due to the constrained and differing nature of device hardware. Factors include variations in screen size and orientation, limitations in memory and storage space, and network bandwidth and connectivity. Our choice of a mobile operating system will generally depend on the target device type.

Power. Power is the most limiting factor for a mobile device. All design decisions should at take into account how much power the device consumes and its effect on overall battery life.

User Interface. When designing the UI for a mobile application, we can not adapt or reuse the UI from a desktop application. We have to device UI so that it is as simple as possible, and designed specifically for pen-based input and limited data entry capabilities as appropriate. We have also consider the various screen sizes and orientations of our target devices when designing our application UI.

Performance Considerations. Designing for a mobile device requires that we consider limited CPU speed, reduced memory and storage, narrow bandwidth and high latency connections, and limited battery life.

File Synchronization : Making Sure Files in Two or More Locations Are Updated

Many of us might have two or more workstations. They can be desktops (PCs) or laptops. We often work at many different places. Students work at their home and their lab. Professionals work at their office using laptop provided by their employer during office hours and sometime they have to continue their works using their own laptop. Removable storages such as flashdisk, CD, DVD, etc are the common choice to bring up the data from office to our home vice versa. After that we select the copy our desired files from the storage to particular location in our workstation. In other words we synchronize the file manually. Later on we will realize that we miss some data and this is bad. That is why we need a tool that guarantee our files/data are synchronized properly.

File Synchronization Softwares

File synchronization (or 'syncing') in computing is the process of making sure that files in two or more locations are updated through certain rules.

There are many free and open-source file synchronization sofwares available such as : Unison, DirSync Pro, Conduit, Unison, etc.

Proprietary software released as freeware are also available : Microsoft ActiveSync and its successor Windows Mobile Device Center syncs mobile devices (Windows), Gbridge Sync folders, Remote desktop, Live web browsing, etc. (Windows), Microsoft Sync Framework syncs files, data and services. A framework, not a tool. (Windows), Microsoft SyncToy (Windows),Windows Live Sync (Previously Microsoft FolderShare) (Windows, OSX).

Unison for Windows and Linux users
The most popular used tool is Unison. Unison is a file-synchronization tool for Unix and Windows. It has been developed by researchers from University of Pennsylvania. It allows two replicas of a collection of files and directories to be stored on different hosts (or different disks on the same host), modified separately, and then brought up to date by propagating the changes in each replica to the other.
Unison shares a number of features with tools such as configuration management packages (CVS, PRCS, Subversion, BitKeeper, etc.), distributed filesystems (Coda, etc.), uni-directional mirroring utilities (rsync, etc.), and other synchronizers (Intellisync, Reconcile, etc). However, there are several points where it differs. Further informations can be found at Unison official website.

Mobile Social Networks as Quality of Life Technology For People With Severe Mental Illness

Have you ever imagine a family-member with mental illness is hanging out alone without any care giver beside him/her physically? Perhaps you will say: "Definitely impossible!". But actually it is not impossible at all. They even could go to their workplace by themselves on time!!

The passages below is a paper summary of "Mobile Social Networks as Quality of Life Technology for People With Severe Mental Illness" by Yao-Jen Chang, Huang-Huan Liu, and Tsen-Yung Wang, from the IEEE Wireless Communications, June 2009.

Social network services such as Facebook, Twitter, or even Blogger has been becoming very popular recently since social network services are focusing on building online communities of people who share interests and/or activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others.

Lately, mobile social networking such as Plazes, Jambo Networks, and playtxt have become popular. Using this kind of service people are now able to not just make friends, share photos and videos, and share blogs by using their mobile phone but also find a person in certain distance or location.

Yao-Jen Chang et al found that mobile social network services (MSNS) can be utilized as a system that may improve the quality of life of people with severe mental illness. They propose an MSNS system that enable a person with mental illness go to their workplace on time with minimum supervision from their job coach/care-giver/family member.

System Architecture
The proposed system architecture is consits of four main components: the client devices (PDA), the wireless access network, the internet, and the server side in which 5 modules are running: web server, location database, matching logic, profile repository, and privacy control.

How does the system work?
Every subject (people with mental illness) is carrying a GPS-enabled PDA. The PDA reports the current location of the subject through GPRS connectivity. Every move of the subject is being monitored and can be seen on the map (provided by Web services on the internet, such as Google Maps). In such condition that the subject is deviating from the pre-set route to or from the workplace, the system will find the nearby caregivers so that the subject can obtain help by pressing the HELP button. By doing this, the short message service (SMS) message is sent by the server to each nearby caregivers. The information about available nearby caregivers will be sent to subject (service requester). If none of the caregivers in certain radius from the subject are available at the time then the system will run the search again.

This system also provides alarm which helps both the subject and the caregiver. The alarm will send notifications to the subject and the caregiver when the subject does not leave home or arrive at the workplace on time. A notification will also be sent when the user leave the workplace too early or too late.

Experimental Result
The prototype of the system is evaluated by involving six participants with age ranges between 20-40 years old. None of them have never used PDAs in their daily life before. The experiments show that none of these participants ever experienced getting lost. The users and the care-givers feel so happy about using this system.

System Limitation
Unfortunately, a battery power of a PDA with the GPS activated can support only two hours. Therefore, the users and especially their families must be aware of regularly checking the power status and then charge the battery when needed.

However, in my opinion, this is such a great innovation. This kind of research should be followed by other researchers in various research fields. The topics may cover low-power consumption on mobile devices, GPS technology, voice-based notification, etc.

1. Prepare your image. You can use several types of images such as .ICO, .PNG, or even .JPG. I myself prefer using .PNG since it takes lower filesize so the web browser will load it faster than other type.

2. Upload your image. You may use some free images hosting services like ImagesHack or PhotoBucket . If your image has been uploaded successfully then you will get a URL to your image.

3. Edit your HTML code. Go to your Layout editor, and select Edit HTML

Note:
If you are using .ico image then you have to change the type='image/png' to type='image/ico'

GNU Toolchain Build With Crosstool For The Xilinx ML410

This documentation walks the reader through a typical GNU cross toolchain build session using Dan Kegel's renowned “crosstool“ scripts. The build is customized for the target board Xilinx ML410 with PowerPC 405 processor.
I also provide you some example in cross-compiling helloworld.c, tcpdump, and also the BNC IRC Proxy.

PF_RING Installation on CentOS 5.3

Luca Deri, the author, has done very great job on this. However, many people (including me :D) found difficulties in installing this PF_RING especially on CentOS 5.3. Hopefully, this documentation could help you. Sorry if the documentation is not written well, I was in hurry at that time.

Yes, indeed this is my 1st post in this blog. Actually I ain`t a good blogger. I ever made several blogs before but they always be 'frozen' later. I was too lazy to write down my idea onto this media. And this was bad.
